Prep Time Cook Time Total Time Servings
20 minutes 10 minutes 30 minutes 8 buns

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Filling options: slow-cooked pork, crispy tofu, spicy chicken
  • Fresh cilantro and sliced cucumbers (for garnish)

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, yeast, and baking powder. Gradually add the warm water and vegetable oil, stirring until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.

Step 2
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size. This allows the dough to develop its soft and airy texture, crucial for achieving pillowy bao buns.

Step 3
After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten into an oval shape. Fold each oval in half over a piece of parchment paper, creating the signature bao shape.

Step 4
Place the buns in a bamboo steamer lined with parchment paper, leaving space between them to expand. Steam the buns over medium heat for about 10 minutes, until they are fluffy and cooked through.

Step 5
Carefully open each steamed bao bun and fill with your choice of savory fillings like slow-cooked pork, crispy tofu, or spicy chicken. Garnish with fresh cilantro and sliced cucumbers for added freshness.
